Someone somewhere
Has proved her mettle in her lover’s house
A cook, cleaner and washerwoman
And a decade-long engagement ring
That changed colours five times
Her teeth glisten endlessly
At his ‘1000 yards wife material’ label
And a promise to see her people soonest

Someone somewhere
Awaits an oil company job
Every uncle promises after school
Adventures on the rig,
Holidays in Paris
Who will help tell him the truth?

Someone somewhere
Has it all figured out
In a sealed journal in her room
A banker by 16,
Married by 18
A vision board not unfamiliar

Someone somewhere
Dipped in the thrift contributors’ purse
For her partner’s trip abroad
Musing on his pledges, each passing night
Squeezed teddy bear across her chest

Someone somewhere
Is working his socks off
In the brutal snow in Europe
Every penny remitted to his kinsmen
For a non-existent building at home
How worthy it’d be
To retire to this palatial manor

Someone somewhere
Has been swayed
By office seekers’ barren pledges
Some pittance and a relief package
His wilting hope is sparked
Prevailing on folks at the pub
“The dawn of a new era is here.”
