It is 4pm
Ubong settles on the couch
as the theme song of his favourite
cartoon fills the living room.

The doorbell rings
Ubong’s chest rises in a panic
as he quietly cranes
his neck through the curtains.

His eyes begin to form tears,
all the air sucked out of the room
as the unwanted figure of his lesson teacher*
rings the bell again.
